Bespoke Harp making

All of our harps are made bespoke by craftsman Tom Watkins in our home work-shop, we can tailor the harp as best we can to suit individual player needs. Here are just a few of the wood choices we have available:

black walnut.jpg

Black walnut

Black walnut tends to produce a deep, rounded sound with strong mid-range presence, offering clarity without harshness. Compared to lighter hardwoods, black walnut slightly softens the brightness of the higher strings while enhancing sustain and resonance, resulting in a balanced, mellow voice that feels expressive and intimate.

cherry wood.jpg

Cherry

Cherry offers a gentle brightness with excellent note definition, sitting between the warmth of darker hardwoods and the sparkle of lighter timbers. Cherry produces a lively, responsive sound with good sustain, allowing melodies to sing while retaining softness and control. As the wood matures, its tonal character often deepens and mellows slightly over time, making cherry a popular choice for harps that aim to combine clarity, warmth, and long-term tonal development.

ash wood.jpg

Ash

Ash produces excellent clarity and projection, with a crisp response that allows each note to speak cleanly and confidently. Compared to darker woods, ash emphasizes the higher frequencies slightly more, giving the harp a lively, energetic voice while still maintaining good balance and sustain. Its strength and elasticity also contribute to a stable, responsive instrument, making ash an ideal choice for players who value definition, versatility, and a clear, expressive sound across a wide range of playing styles.
